History
The Arch of Titus
Built about 81 AD
After Titus died in 81, an arch was raised to the deified Titus at the top of the Sacred Way in the name of the Senate and People of Rome. One relief inside shows the triumph: soldiers wearing laurel carry the menorah, the table of the showbread, and the silver trumpets toward a gate. The arch still stands, and its relief is the most famous ancient image of the Temple's lampstand.

Legend
Yohanan ben Zakkai and Yavneh
70 AD
Rabbinic tradition tells that Rabban Yohanan ben Zakkai, seeing the city doomed, had his disciples carry him out of Jerusalem in a coffin, as if dead. Brought before the Roman commander, he greeted him as emperor, and when the prophecy came true he asked for Yavneh and its sages. There, after the destruction, the rabbis rebuilt Jewish life around study, prayer, and law instead of sacrifice.
